Elliptical Trainers

I like elliptical trainers for a couple of reasons. Elliptical trainers are low impact. They are easier on the joints, especially the knees, than treadmills. Elliptical trainers seem to me to give a much more better workout than treadmills - perhaps it's because you can use the upper body as well as the lower body better.

Physically, elliptical trainers burn about the same number of calories as treadmills. I've used treadmills for years, but since I've also been using elliptical trainers, I've noticed that I seem to get my heart rate up faster and get the same workout in a shorter time.

Low cost elliptical trainers run from as low as $200 or $300. As with anything, though, you get what you pay for. I can't count the number of piece of cheap exercise equipment I've gotten rid of through the years. You will want to balance quality and features versus cost. The best elliptical trainers can cost several thousand dollars, but are basically commercial quality, the sort of equipment that can last for years.

Elliptical trainers are an excellent way to achieve physical fitness at home. They are easy on the knees, give a great aerobic workout, and are at least comparable to good treadmills, maybe better. If you've never used one, I recommend trying an elliptical trainer out at a health club before you decide to buy one. Not a member? Most health clubs will let you come as a guest or buy a guest pass. It's a good way to see if you like elliptical trainers before you make a large investment.
